Natasha Bedingfield has designs on marriage

The U.S. has embraced her music (her latest album, “Pocketful of Sunshine,” reached gold status). She’s getting married in the next few months (to California businessman Matt Robinson). And major designers want to dress her (Vera Wang is making “the dress”).

Add to that: She’s gorgeous. And nice. So nice that you feel a little sad to see her leave when the interview is over.

Bedingfield is part of a wave of female singers from across the pond who are making a big splash Stateside. There’s the sweet Leona Lewis, Welsh crooner Duffy and soulster Adele, who won best new artist at the Grammys last month. That’s not to mention last year’s best new artist winner, Amy Winehouse.

“America is so open to what’s happening in other countries right now,” Bedingfield says. “I’m British and from New Zealand so I’m kind of representing both countries, which is nice. And I feel proud, like [with] Adele winning. … I feel really proud.”

“I love coming to New York for Fashion Week. I pick up new ideas and pay homage to some of my favorite designers,” she said.

Bedingfield joined CNN to talk about those designers, describe her sense of style and discuss how the next album is shaping up. The following is an edited version of the interview:

CNN: Tell me about your latest single, “Soulmate.”

Natasha Bedingfield: “Soulmate” is actually one of the first singles I wrote on this album. It was inspired by reading a book called “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus.” And the book is just all about how men and women are different and how we kind of have to explain to each other, because we’re speaking in a different language — how to love in the way that we need it.

CNN: In the song, you’re looking for Mr. Right, yet in real life you have found Mr. Right.

Bedingfield: Well, I wrote that song before I met Mr. Right. My first single ever was actually a single called “Single,” all about being single — a bit of a tongue twister there — like celebrating that stage of life. And I felt like on that next album I wanted to give part two to that. The whole album really is about relationships.

CNN: So what does that mean for the next album?

Bedingfield: Ah! The next album. Well, you know I’m getting married very soon. …

    CNN: Congratulations.

Bedingfield: Thank you. So the next album … I don’t know what it’s going to be about yet. I like to choose a theme and keep the songs in that, but I’m very excited.

CNN: Haven’t you started working on it already? You were doing some writing in New Zealand.

Bedingfield: I did. I wrote a lot in New Zealand. That’s where my family comes from, so whenever I go back there I get inspired and get in touch with nature and use it as a chance to start writing. I also wrote on a bus called the Lennon bus. It’s a charity that Yoko Ono started. It’s got a studio on the bus, and it’s all about teaching kids how to use the studio. So I did a little writing on there as well with some kids. It was cool.

CNN: Who are some of your favorite designers?

Bedingfield: I love a lot of the British designers actually. Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood.

CNN: Have you always been into fashion?

Bedingfield: Always. Even when I was a kid. I went out and got a job early on, probably minimum wage so that I could spend extra on — you know, your parents just buy you like classics, right — so I could go and get my own little cool things.

CNN: How would you describe your style?

Bedingfield: A little eclectic, a little sophisticated and somewhere in between really. [I like] clothes that make you feel good, fabrics that are nice and feminine. But with a tiny bit of masculinity in there as well just to edge it up.

CNN: The fashion world is so different from the music world. What is the main difference there? You get to dabble in both worlds.

Bedingfield: Well, it’s interesting, because the worlds seem like they’re getting closer and closer because a lot of artists end up having modeling contracts. It’s actually quite a happy working thing. I feel like as an artist you get a chance to stamp your own personality on the clothes that you wear. And what you wear reflects on who you are. A model … they’re kind of more like a coat hanger for the designer. And I love the fact that designers and artists are working together because we end up creating something very unique.

CNN: Do you get lots of free clothes?

Bedingfield: I do. It’s one of the perks of my job.

    CNN: That’s not fair.

    Bedingfield: Yeah, I love it.

CNN: How do the Brits feel about all these British singers who are doing so well in the U.S.? Do they feel proud when their artists make it overseas? Is there a bit of possessiveness?

Bedingfield: I think that with every country if someone leaves home you get worried that they’re going to forget about you. It’s important not to forget about where you’re from and your roots, and so I’m conscious of that and make sure that people know how grateful [I am] and that I am coming home.

I’m not away forever. I’ve been touring all over the States this year: two major tours; my album went gold and it’s great. But really there is no place like home.

CNN: What is the biggest difference between touring in the U.S. and the UK?

Bedingfield: Well, the U.S. is a lot bigger. But it’s not really a big difference. An audience is an audience. I guess you could hear different accents singing your songs back.

Singer-Songwriter Natasha Bedingfield Finds Love in America

Born in New Zealand and raised in England, singer-songwriter Natasha Bedingfield grew up in a musical family. Natasha sang with her brother Daniel and sister Nikola as “The DNA Algorithm.”

Her 2004 debut solo CD, “Unwritten,” earned her a Grammy nomination, and sold more than three million copies worldwide. In 2007, Natasha released an album titled “N.B.,” and last year followed with “Pocketful of Sunshine.” Since her start five years ago, Natasha has sold over 10 million records around the world. Natasha Bedingfield has become one of the most popular female singers in the last few years. She spent all of 2008 on tour promoting her latest CD, “Pocketful of Sunshine.”

Natasha found love last year when she became engaged to California businessman Matt Robinson. “He stole my heart! I was holding out. My first song was called “Single”, it was about being solo and proud of it and independent,” she said. “I really did not fall [in love] for just any person… yeah, he won my heart.”

With three Top 10 Billboard chart singles from her latest album, Natasha says the thrill starts before the record is even released. “It is amazing. When you are in the studio and you are writing things [songs], and you get that excitement just after you have written something good. You feel like a kind of buzz and you kind of want to test it out because that is the next stage really,” she said. “You might like something, but do other people like it? It is the best compliment when other people hear something you wrote, and they take it as a personal song. When someone comes up to me and goes, ‘This is our song, or my song’, that is very special.”

Not only is Natasha expanding as a performer, her new CD also demonstrates her songwriting ability. “My love first, actually, [is] the writing process,” she says, “that is what I like the most. It [songwriting] gets me going and makes me tick.”

Natasha’s most recent hit, “Angel,” has a special meaning for her. “I was in the studio with [producer] Rodney Jerkins. He is someone I grew up really admiring. He is an amazing producer, and he showed me the song ‘Angel’, and I went crazy over it. I was like, ‘Please give me that song,’ and he said, ‘I think [it is for] another artist like Beyonce or someone else singing it’ and I said, ‘No, you have to give it to me. This is my song and I am singing it!'”

“Mainly the thing that stood out to me is the title, “Angel.” My mom [Molly] has a charity that is all about kids. It’s called “Global Angels.” So, it was the first thing that attracted me to that song,” she recalls. “It was like, ‘I could sing a song that is a bit about protecting the person they love’, and that is what the charity is all about.”

“‘Stop The Traffik’ is about stopping the slave trade,” she explains. “Even though we celebrate that we are free from slavery, there are actually so many, like thousands and thousands of people in that situation [slavery] all over the world. This is an amazing coalition of organizations which is about putting a stop to that.”

With her successful music career and involvement with charity, Natasha Bedingfield has maintained a positive image and is honored to be called a “role model” by other celebrities. “I was at the Teen Choice Awards (2008) and Miley Cyrus said I was a role model,” she said.

Natasha is in New Zealand seeking inspiration for her next album. She will be working with producer Brian Kennedy who created “Disturbia” for Rihanna. Natasha hopes to have the new CD ready by the end of 2009.

    Archuleta Eyes Bedingfield Collaboration

David Archuleta wants to record a duet with Natasha Bedingfield.

The former American Idol star – who recently described himself as “weird looking” – says his “ultimate” collaboration would be with the These Words hitmaker.

Archuleta dishes, “I love that the UK has pop which doesn’t need to be urban or bubblegum like it does in the US

“I’m pop but I’m still trying new things. I like things that have soul so the ultimate collaboration would be with Natasha Bedingfield.”

The adorable 18-year-old also revealed how he fought back after developing vocal paralysis that left him struggling to speak.

He added, “I wasn’t able to perform. It was tough but I refused to have surgery. I’m now fully over it.”

    Natasha Bedingfield’s Dream Wedding Dress

    Oh to be a celebrity!

Not only is Natasha Bedingfield getting married to a hunky, successful guy — one of the world’s top designers has offered to make her wedding dress!

“I’ve got a wedding dress now,” said the excited Pocketful of Sunshine singer, who also revealed to OK! that they have already set a date for the big day.

Vera Wang wanted to make me a dress,”
    she said. Jealous much?

Speaking at the W Lounge at New York Fashion Week, Natasha said that, suddenly, the whole is suddenly starting to feel very real.

“When you get a dress — for a girl — then you know you’re really going to have a wedding,”
    she smiled.

    Is she a Bridezilla?

“I’m not super-obsessed about it,” said Natasha, who accepted a proposal from Californian businessman Matt Robinson in September. “It’s just going to be like a big party for me. But we’re not allowed any more details than that, though. The location and the day is secret,” she said.
